Lakers Fall 3-2 to No. 3/3 Penn State in AHA Championship Despite Third Period Surge

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.  – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team faced off against No. 3/3 Penn State in the AHA Championship for the fourth consecutive season. The Nittany Lions took an early lead in the first frame and then added two more in the second. The Lakers came out strong in the third period. They dominated control of the puck and netted two to put the game within reach. However, PSU held them off and the championship ended, 3-2. Magdalena Luggin made 30 saves and Abby Poitras was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mercyhurst (23-11-3) began the first period with a strong defensive effort, highlighted by Luggin's multiple saves against early shots from Penn State (32-5-0). Regina Metzler and Julia Perjus secured several faceoff wins, maintaining pressure in the offensive zone, contributing to the team's impressive streak of winning at least 23 faceoffs in 11 consecutive games. Despite Penn State's goal at 9:20, the Lakers responded with aggressive play, including a power play opportunity in the final minute. They were unable to break through in the first period as it ended 1-0.

The second period began with the Lakers showing offensive intent, winning the opening faceoff and quickly applying pressure through multiple shots on goal. Sophie McKinley and Berlin Lolacher both tested the Nittany Lion's defense early. Penn State then shifted momentum at 7:36 with Nicole Hall scoring the first goal of the period. The Lakers faced increased pressure and were unable to capitalize on their chances. The Lakers were unluckily penalized for interference as Penn State then extended its lead to three with a power-play goal at 2:06. The period closed with Mercyhurst trailing, as Luggin continued to make crucial saves to limit further damage.

Mercyhurst began the third period trailing but shifted momentum with an unassisted goal from Poitras at 16:15, narrowing the deficit to two. The Lakers continued pressing offensively, with numerous attempts keeping the Nittany Lion defense on alert. As the period progressed, Mercyhurst's persistence paid off when Berlin Lolacher scored with an extra attacker at 1:19, assisted by Julia Schalin, bringing the score to 3-2. The Lakers had dominated the whole period, but they simply ran out of time as Penn State went on to win, 3-2.
