ONEONTA, NY – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team finished 1-2 at the Hartwick Open Saturday, with all three games decided by a pair of goals. The Lakers sandwiched two 10-8 defeats to Brown University and Siena College around a 9-7 victory over Connecticut College.
Mercyhurst trailed Brown 6-3 after a quarter before closing to within a goal, 6-5, at halftime. Brown outscored the Lakers 4-1 in the third quarter before allowing Mercyhurst's final tally in the fourth. Freshman
Kennedy Watson scored four times and helped on another goal while junior
Meagan Marques added two more. Junior

Jesse Sworden made 14 saves.
Against Connecticut College, the Lakers rallied with five fourth-quarter scores to overcome a 7-6 deficit. Watson had another four-game game while freshman
Katie Appell posted three, junior
Aleeyse Utech two and Marques and Blackman added solo tallies. Sworden was credited with ten saves in picking up the win.
Mercyhurst kept the Siena came close throughout, trailing 2-1 after a quarter, 4-3 at halftime, and 8-6 after three. The teams divided four goals evenly in the fourth quarter. Watson finished an 11-goal day with three and now has 40 goals on the season. Sophomore
Jena Clinch scored twice while Utech, Marques, and sophomore Victoria Arciniega also found the back of the net. Sophomore
Rachel Stock played the day's final contest and made eight stops.
Watson totaled eleven goals and a helper in the three games to pace Mercyhurst. Blackman wound up with two-and-six, Marques had four-and-two, Appell three of each while Clinch ended with two-and-four and Utech totaled three-and-one.
Mercyhurst, now 5-7, will play at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, next Saturday at 11am.
