LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team split a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) matches on Sunday at Bucknell University. The Lakers opened with a 15-14 overtime victory over George Washington University for their first conference win of the season. Mercyhurst lost to Princeton, 16-7, in the nightcap. After Sunday's action, the Lakers moved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
In the opener, the Lakers trailed 9-8 after three periods before rallying to send the game to overtime. Mercyhurst outscored the Colonials, 2-1, in a pair of three-minute overtime periods to earn the one-goal victory.
Junior
Meagan Marques and freshmen
Katie Appell and
Kennedy Watson each scored three goals to pace the Laker offense. Appell added a pair of assists while Marques and Watson had one helper apiece. Watson also added a team-high four steals.
Sophomores
Becky Insalaco and
Jena Clinch each scored twice while junior
Annie Blackman and sophomore
Vicky Arciniega each had a goal. Insalaco also led the squad with four drawn ejections.
Junior goalkeeper
Jesse Sworden posted 14 saves and one steal in the victory.
Against Princeton, the Lakers fell behind, 5-1, after the opening quarter and dropped a 16-7 decision to the Tigers.
Watson and Appell paced the Mercyhurst offense with a pair of goals each. Marques, Arciniega, and Clinch also scored for the Lakers. Marques also added a team-high two steals
Sworden made five saves in the loss.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Sunday, March 8 when it hosts Washington and Jefferson at Penn State Behrend. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
