CALIFORNIA, Pa. - One day after a thrilling come-from-behind 5-4 win over West Liberty on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament, the Mercyhurst women's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Sunday with a 5-0 loss against the Atlantic Region's top seed, and 12th-ranked team in the country, California University of Pennsylvania. The Lakers ended their season with a 13-6 overall record while the Vulcans improved to 14-2 and advance to the round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The Vulcans won all three doubles matches by identical 8-1 scores to take a 3-0 advantage heading to singles action. California won the opening two matches in singles play to end the contest.
Macarena Aguirre saw her first action of the season after getting pressed into services when
Taylor Wedlake was injured against West Liberty the day before. Aguirre dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to California's Mariela Sarinana.
It was Mercyhurst's second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, both resulting in 5-0 losses to California in the second round of the tournament.
