PRINCETON, N.J.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team won and lost at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championships Saturday. The Lakers beat Penn State Behrend, 16-5, and fell, 13-12, to Washington and Jefferson. They will face Gannon for seventh place Sunday at 10:20 a.m.
Against Behrend, the Lakers took a 3-2 lead after a quarter. Five second-quarter scores made it 8-4 at the half. Mercyhurst added four goals in the third period to pull away from the Lions.
Josh Daniel finished with two goals and two assists.
Gavin Oakley posted three goals and an assist, while
Alex Strong and
Jordan Hodur each put up two goals and a helper.
Joe Yamamoto scored twice and
Dave Matulis and
Joey Ryan added a goal and an assist apiece.
Andrew Too-A-Foo made 10 saves and dished out two helpers in net.
The Lakers grabbed a 5-2 advantage after a quarter in the match with W&J. The Presidents rallied to go ahead, 8-6, at halftime. A fourth-period rally came up just short as Washington and Jefferson held on.
Yamamoto led with six goals and an assist. Strong tallied a goal and three assists.
Samuel Lopez recorded a goal and a helper, while Oakley,
Jack Howe,
Shaquille Mitchell each scored once. Too-A-Foo registered six stops in goal.
Mercyhurst will take on GU for a fourth consecutive week with seventh place on the line tomorrow.
