ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team finished second at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division II Championship Saturday. The Lakers beat Salem International, 19-11, before falling, 8-7, to Gannon. GU hosted the event at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 6-1 lead after a quarter against Salem. It led, 10-4, at halftime and then scored six times in the third frame to take control.
Joe Yamamoto led with four goals and two assists.
Samuel Lopez put up a hat trick and a pair of helpers, while
Jordan Hodur scored three times.
Shaquille Mitchell,
Dave Matulis, and
John Reyes each scored twice in the game.
Kevin Doyle made 10 saves and added an assist in goal.Â
Against Gannon, the Lakers led, 4-1, at the end of the first period, and took a 6-2 advantage into the half. The Golden Knights rallied to pick up the one-goal win, however.Â
Matulis scored two goals. Mitchell, Hodur, Yamamoto,
Jack Howe, and
Joey Ryan each scored once. Doyle posted 10 stops with two steals in net.
Mercyhurst plays at Bucknell tomorrow at 1 p.m.
