Women's Hockey Hosts Crucial CHA Series Against #8 Robert Morris

Senior Christie Cicero looks to extend her eight-game scoring streak against Robert Morris this weekend. This season Cicero has 24 points on 11 goals and 13 assists.

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's hockey team returns to conference play with a two-game series against the eight-ranked Robert Morris University. Game one of the series will be held on Friday, January 24 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center with the series concluding on Saturday, January 25. Games will begin at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively and there will be free giveaways at the door.

The Lakers are 14-6-3 on the season after coming off a 0-1-1 weekend against then ranked No. 3 Cornell. Mercyhurst is 7-2-1 in the CHA conference and are just two points away from Robert Morris from a first place finish. With the pressure on, the Lakers are looking to extend their home record of 7-2-2 and upset the Colonials perfect road record of 7-0-2.

The Lakers saw their unbeaten streak of eight games come to an end after Cornell took away a 6-4 win after scoring an empty net power-play goal late in the third period. Mercyhurst tied Friday's contest 4-4 after giving up another power-play goal mid-way through the third period. Senior Christie Cicero has been contributing to the Lakers recent success as she has continued her scoring streak to eight games after the weekend. Cicero's eight game streak is currently the longest streak on the team this season.

The sophomore class has also been solid including the notice of defenseman J'nai Mahadeo who collected a season-high three assists in a contest on Saturday. Mahadeo has six points this season on two goals and four assists with most of her points coming from the second half of the season. Forwards Jenna Dingeldein and Emily Janiga have also been solid as they were the only two other players to score three or more points against the Big Red. Dingeldein tallied four points (1g, 3a) while Janiga added three (1g, 2a).

Robert Morris has recently matched a program high 19 wins with a victory over No. 9 Quinnipiac to improve to 19-3-2 on the season. With a record of 8-1-1 in the conference, Robert Morris currently is two points ahead of the Lakers in the standings. With the Colonials in the rankings for the third straight week, and have climbed to eighth in the polls due to recent success. With the help of rookie class members like Brittany Howard, the Colonials leading scorer, and goaltender Jessica Dodds (16-0-2) Robert Morris is undefeated on the road heading into the weekend (7-0-2).

Despite Mercyhurst leading the overall series 33-6-1, Robert Morris leads the last ten contests by a margin of 4-6. Last time out Mercyhurst shutout the Colonials for their first win at the RMU Island since January of 2012. Janiga and sophomore Jaclyn Arbour tallied goals in the win. In game two, Robert Morris captured their second win against a then-nationally ranked opponent of the season with a 3-2 victory after scoring three goals in the first. Against Robert Morris, Mercyhurst is 3-2 in the last five contests at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
