ERIE, Pa. – Junior Fernando Martinez scored less than a minute into overtime to lead the fourth-ranked Mercyhurst University Lakers to a 2-1 victory over #11 ranked University of Charleston on Sunday. With the win, the Lakers are now 1-1-0 in the season. Charleston fell to 1-1-0.

The Golden Eagles were the first to get the advantage by scoring at the 30:47 minute of the first half. Charleston's Jules Gabbiadini tallied his first goal of the season after beating goaltender Mikko Sarkkinen to the right corner of the net.

Less than  two minutes later, the Lakers received a corner kick opportunity and scored the equalizer. Sophomore Sten Marcson sent the corner kick to the top of the goaltender's box to give junior Ryan Lund the perfect opportunity for a header into the right bottom corner of the net. Lund evened the score at the 33:24 mark into the first half.

The second half was scoreless, forcing overtime. Mercyhurst outshot Charleston 24 to 6 in the first 90:00 minutes.

Mercyhurst did not waste any time as the Lakers crashed the Charleston defense at the whistle. On the offensive side, Martinez dribbled through the defense from right to left and quickly shot the ball underneath goaltender Fabian Veit. The goal marked Martinez's first goal of the season.

Sarkkinen (1-1-0) played 90:45 in net, picking up his first win of the season after making three saves in net. Veit (1-1-0) took the loss for Charleston after allowing two goals on nine shots on target.

The Lakers will compete in their first conference match at West Chester University on Friday, September 13 at 2:30 p.m.
