Fernando Martinez scored three goals and the #17 Mercyhurst men's soccer team won, 5-0, at East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon. Miiko Sarkkinen recorded a shutout in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match.
The Lakers wasted little time getting started, as Martinez scored 43 seconds into the contest, heading in a pass from
Matt Campana. At the 19:56 mark,
Sten Marcson found
Jack Watson for a goal and a 2-0 Laker advantage. Ten minutes later,
Eyale Dagne assisted on Martinez's second goal. Just over two minutes after that, Watson found Martinez for the hat trick, further stretching Mercyhurst's lead.
Joseph Korb assisted on a
Danny Deakin goal at the 36:57 mark, closing a run of four goals in 17:01.
Sarkkinen made five first-half saves to keep ESU off the board. He finished the day with six saves while posting his first shutout of the season and second of his career. Sarkkinen shut out the University of Charleston in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Martinez picked up his first career hat trick and finished off a big scoring weekend. The junior had a goal and an assist at West Chester on Friday. He has scored a goal in his last three outings. Martinez is the first Laker to score three goals in one match since
Alex Manea pulled the feat against Millersville on November 3, 2012.

Dale White's squad outshot the Warriors, 15-10, including an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Each side garnered two corner kicks.
Mercyhurst is now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in PSAC action. ESU dropped to 0-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The Lakers play Ohio Dominican in a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 18. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
