MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Mercyhurst defeated Robert Morris 1-0 on Monday. The Lakers were outshot 19-4 but kept the shutout, including a second-half stretch from 52:10 to 61:30 in which they survived 12 Robert Morris attacking actions without conceding.
Ronny Wakelin put the Lakers in front at 39:51, finishing a chance set up by Harrison Hubert and Max Beech for the match's first goal. It was Wakelin's first career goal as a Laker. Earlier, the Lakers generated looks from Harrison Dudley and Luis Felipe Santos, with Santos' 27:34 shot saved by Robert Morris' goalkeeper. The Lakers also played through a physical stretch that included Hubert's yellow card and several fouls, while Christoffer Kalkar kept Robert Morris off the board with a save on a bottom-right shot at 30:03. Robert Morris earned a corner kick and sent a shot wide after the Lakers' goal, but the Lakers reached halftime ahead 1-0.
The Lakers kept Robert Morris off the scoreboard in the second half despite facing sustained pressure, closing out a 1-0 win. Robert Morris hit the top woodwork in the 49th minute, then generated seven shots and five corner kicks from 52:10 to 61:30 without breaking through. The Lakers found a response with a corner kick in the 70th minute and a Wakelin shot that went high in the 73rd. In the final stretch, Kalkar made saves in the 88th and 89th minutes as the Lakers held the lead through full time. Kalkar made his first career start in net and recorded his first career shutout.
