WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Mercyhurst began Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 victory at West Chester. The Lakers, preseason conference favorites, improved to 2-1 overall while the Golden Rams fell to 0-2-1 overall and to 0-1 in the PSAC.

The match was scoreless for the first 39 minutes before senior defenseman Matt Campana set up junior Fernando Martinez for his second goal of the season. Martinez's first goal of the year gave the Lakers a 2-1 overtime win against Charleston last Sunday.

The Lakers began the second half by scoring twice in a four-minute span. Freshman midfield Danny Deakin celebrated Friday the 13th by notching his first two collegiate goals, one at 48:55 and the other at 52:53. Martinez helped on the first, a shot outside the box into the left corner, while freshman Jack Watson made a crossing pass to the Sheffield, England, native on the second marker. Deakin did the rest. All three Mercyhurst goals came at the expense of netminder Ryan Shultz.

West Chester averted a shutout when Cameron Scott headed one past Lakers' goalkeeper Mikko Sarkkinen at 72:27.

Mercyhurst outshot West Chester 13-10 and led in corner kicks 5-1.

The Lakers will look for their third straight win tomorrow at 2:30 when they play at East Stroudsburg.
