CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Sunday after suffering a 5-0 loss to top-seeded California University of Pennsylvania in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Mercyhurst finishes its season with a 15-5 overall record, while the Vulcans advance in the tournament with a 16-9 overall record.
Mercyhurst blanked West Liberty and California did the same to Virginia State on Saturday to set up the second-round contest.
The Lakers, who had lost to the Vulcans earlier in the season, could not win a set in the five completed matches. In doubles, the Vulcans' duo of Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey, ranked 13th in the country, knocked off Mercyhurst's top duo of
Caroline Bristol and
Sarah Baich by an 8-3 final. Mercyhurst's tandem of
Taylor Wedlake and
Katelyn Caniford also dropped an 8-3 decision at #3 doubles.
Only two matches in singles action were completed. Senior
Rebecca Haener lost in straight sets to 42nd-ranked Alexandra Borgenhoff, 6-2 and 6-0, at #3 singles. Baich lost in straight sets to Rey at #4 singles, 6-1 and 6-0.
This marked the second time in the last three seasons that Mercyhurst advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lakers got to that point in 2011 and lost to the Vulcans in that season as well by the score of 6-0.
