Jope, Fernandez Lead Women's Water Polo To Sweep Saturday

WASHINGTON, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team swept two games Saturday. The Lakers won at Washington & Jefferson, 12-4, and then defeated Grove City College, 7-5. Both contests were held at W&J in Washington, Pennsylvania.
 
In the win over the Presidents, the Lakers exploded for six goals in the first period. Four third-quarter goals gave Mercyhurst plenty of breathing room in the road victory.
 
Cailin Jope led with four goals and an assist, while Stephanie Fernandez had four goals and Annie Blackman had a goal and five helpers. Allie Grimes scored twice and Bella Hersh added a goal and an assist. Jesse Sworden made five saves in goal in the first half. Hannah Metzger came on for the second half, tallying three saves, four steals, and an assist.
 
Against the Wolverines, the Lakers got off to a slower start. The game was scoreless after a quarter. Mercyhurst took a 3-2 halftime lead and then added three goals in the third frame, holding for a two-goal win.
 
Jope posted four goals and an assist and Grimes had two goals and a helper. Fernandez contributed a goal and an assist. Sworden recorded 10 saves in net.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 7-6 this season. It will play five games next weekend at the University of Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
