NORTH EAST, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team lost twice Sunday at the North East Aquatic Center. The Lakers fell, 9-7, to Brown and then dropped a 7-6 decision to George Washington.
In the game against Brown, Mercyhurst trailed, 4-2, after one quarter and, 5-2, at halftime. The Lakers scored three goals in the third period, but a pair of fourth-quarter scores by the Bears were enough to clinch the game.
Lisett Calderon led with three goals and two assists. She also grabbed four steals.
Cailin Jope had two goals and
Meagan Marques dished out three assists.
Jesse Sworden made 11 saves and four steals in net.
Against GW, the game came down to the final seconds. The Colonials were ahead, 3-2, at the half. A high-scoring third frame left the game 6-5 in favor of the visitors. Each team scored once in the fourth quarter, as the Lakers took possession with 19 seconds left, needing a goal to tie the contest. A diving stop by the GW goalie preserved the win for the Colonials.
Calderon posted two goals and two assists. Jope tallied two goals and two helpers as well.
Aleeyse Utech and
Annie Blackman each scored, while Marques recorded two assists. Sworden made several big saves on her way to 12 stops for the match.
Mercyhurst is now 5-6 this season. It travels to Washington & Jefferson for two games Saturday, March 9.
