ERIE, Pa.- The #15 Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team beat Lake Erie College, 16-7, Wednesday afternoon. Rebecca Himes recorded five goals and three assists to lead the Lakers to a non-conference victory at chilly Tullio Field.
With temperatures in the 30s and a strong wind, the teams did anything they could to stay warm. The Storm began strong, scoring twice in the first 2:33 of play. Mercyhurst took control from there, scoring 11 straight goals.
Anna LeGrett scored with 27:03 left in the half and then Himes found the back of the net less than a minute later.
Kayla Minner assisted on another Himes' goal at the 23:35 mark. LeGrett found
Alisha Catalino for a score 35 seconds later. With 20:35 remaining, Minner scored to make it 5-2. Himes passed to
Hannah Corton, who finished just 12 seconds after Minner. Minner scored on a free position shot with 15:09 to go, giving the hosts a 7-2 advantage.
Himes finished a Minner pass for another goal and then Himes hit
Emily Gebhardt for a goal at the 11:09 mark to stretch the lead. LeGrett found Himes for yet another goal and then Catalino found Corton, who scored with 9:49 to play, making it 11-2.
After a Storm score, the Lakers went back on the attack. Himes scored with 3:09 left. LEC answered with a goal, but Corton closed the first half with a score with 35 seconds showing on the clock. Mercyhurst went into the half with a 13-4 lead.
Corton's free position goal started scoring in the second half. Himes assisted on a LeGrett goal a few minutes later. Lake Erie scored to cut the deficit to 10, but Gebhardt scored from Minner to make it 16-5 with 14:07 remaining.
Himes tied a career high with five goals and set a new personal best with three assists, while Minner had two goals and three helpers. Corton scored a career-high four times and LeGrett added a pair of goals and two assists. Gebhardt had two goals and Catalino had a goal and an assist. Ashriel West led the Storm with four goals.
The Lakers outshot LEC, 40-11, and won 19-25 draw controls.
Rebecca Muscella made two saves in net, picking up her third win of the year.
Mercyhurst improved to 3-1 this year, while Lake Erie dropped to 3-1 overall. The Lakers host Findlay (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 19.
