Staten Island, NY – Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse fell in a tightly contested battle against Wagner College this afternoon by a score of 11-10.
How it Happened
Wagner came out strong in the opening quarter, scoring the first three goals of the game and shutting out the Lakers to take a 3-0 lead into the second.
The second quarter was all Mercyhurst, as the Lakers erupted for six unanswered goals. Whitley Easton led the charge with three goals in the frame, while Amanda Bailey, Emma Cimino, and Meghan Nasman each added one to give the Lakers a 6-3 advantage at halftime.
Wagner responded quickly in the third, netting three straight goals to tie the game at six. Cimino and Easton answered with goals of their own to regain the lead for Mercyhurst at 8-6. Wagner managed to close the gap with one more goal before the end of the quarter, making it 8-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth, Hannah Young extended the lead with a goal, followed by another from Nasman to make it 10-7 in favor of the Lakers. However, Wagner mounted a late comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to take an 11-10 lead. Mercyhurst was unable to find the equalizer in the closing minutes and ultimately came up just short.
