Robert Morris Upsets #7 Women's Hockey 4-2

ERIE, Pa. – A late third period rally by the seventh-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team fell short as Robert Morris scored an empty net goal to finish a 4-2 upset of the Lakers.  This is the second time in 14 games that the Colonials have won at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
 
The Lakers fell to 21-6-1 in the season, and suffered their third los sin the College Hockey America conference.  The Colonials improved to 11-11-3 overall, 7-7-1 in the CHA and picked up their third win against the Lakers in three tries this season. 
 
Mercyhurst scored first about half-way through the opening period.  Freshman Jenna Dingeldein tallied her 13th goal of the season.  Senior assistant captain Lauren Jones and sophomore goaltender Amanda Makela picked up the assists. Robert Morris tied the game at one when Katie Fergus scored a power play goal late in the period at 18:14.  The Lakers outshot the Colonials 8-to-4 in the first period. 
 
Although shots on goal in the second period were tied at 10, Robert Morris scored the lone goal to give the Colonials a 2-1 edge.  Brandi Pollock tallied her first goal of the season at 13:50 into the second, with Katelyn Scott and Maddie Collias picking up the assists. 
 
Thea Imbrogno gave the Colonials a 3-1 advantage with an unassisted goal at 4:28 of the third. The Lakers made it interesting late in the game when junior captain Christine Bestland slid one past Robert Morris' goaltender Kristen Diciocco to narrow the deficit to 3-2.  With about a minute left in the period, the Mercyhurst pulled Makela for an extra skater.  But the Lakers could not get the equalizer and Robert Morris scored into an empty net to seal the win.

The Laker power play was 0-for-5 in the contest. Mercyhurst is now 1-for-16 on its power-play in the three meetings with Robert Morris, while RMU is 5-for-18 in the series and after going 1-for-5 on the afternoon. The game also marked the first time the Lakers have lost after scoring the first goal. Mercyhurst is now 19-1-0 this season in that regard.

Makela made 20 saves in net for Mercyhurst as her record fell to 9-5-1 in the season.  DiCiocco got her third win for Robert Morris in three games against the Lakers this season by turning aside 28 shots, improving to 9-10-3. 
 
The two teams will meet again at the Mercyhurst Ice Center Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Lakers will celebrate Faculty Appreciation Day.
