MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Southern New Hampshire stretched the Mercyhurst University baseball team's losing streak to four as the Penmen hit three homeruns in a 7-3 win over the Lakers on Saturday afternoon. Southern New Hampshire improved to 3-0 while the Lakers dropped to 2-4.
Rightfielder Jon Minucci broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with a solo homer and third baseman Riley Palmer followed one batter later with a two-run blast. Both dingers came against Mercyhurst starter and losing pitcher, redshirt senior
Matthew Jimenez (0-2). The Lakers got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but wasted a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation when freshman second baseman
Brendan Cox bounced into a double play.
Junior
Adam Curyto relieved Jimenez to start the fifth and allowed three runs, only one earned, in two innings of work. The Penmen plated a run in the fifth on a steal of home and added two more in the sixth on a round-tripper by left fielder Anthony Aceto. The homerun came with two out and followed an infield error, one of two miscues committed by the Lakers on the afternoon.
Mercyhurst tried to keep pace, getting solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Junior third baseman
Joe Pantano had both runs-batted-in. His fifth inning single plated sophomore designated hitter
Kolin McMillen, who had three of the Lakers' seven hits, and his bases-loaded-walk brought in the Lakers' final run.
Southern New Hampshire closed the scoring in the ninth with an unearned run on an infield error and a wild pitch.
Four Laker relievers quieted the Penmen bats over the final three innings. Freshman
Jim Solano, junior
Dan Parker, senior
Donald Bowes, and junior
Nick Cianci combined to hold Southern New Hampshire to an unearned run and one hit over the last three innings.
Four of the Penmen's six hits went for extra bases - three homers and a double. All seven Mercyhurst hits were singles.. The Lakers stranded eight baserunners.
Mercyhurst continues its spring trip tomorrow with games against West Virginia Wesleyan and Stonehill.
