#10 Women's Hockey Upset by RIT, 2-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The tenth ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team fell to Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-1 on Friday afternoon. The Lakers fell to 7-5-2 in the season and 2-2-1 overall in the CHA. RIT improved to 8-5-1 overall and remain unbeaten in the CHA at 4-0-1.

All the action took place in the first period with RIT scoring the first goal of the contest. At the 9:29 mark, Kolbee McCrea scored her fifth goal of the season. She was assisted by Morgan Scoyne and Kourtney Kunichika.

Sophomore Emily Janiga scored the equalizer at the 13:25 mark on a Mercyhurst's first power-play opportunity of the contest. Senior Christie Cicero set up the play for Janiga as well as freshman Jillian Skinner.

However just two minutes later, the Tigers scored the eventual game-winner at the 15:33 mark on a power-play goal of their own. McCrea tallied her second goal of the contest and sixth of the season to give her team the 2-1 edge.

The Lakers outshot RIT 43 to 24 throughout the entire contest. Senior Christie Cicero and junior Molly Byrne led the team with seven shots a piece while freshman Jillian Skinner and senior Kaleigh Chippy attempted six.

Mercyhurst outplayed the Tigers throughout the second and third periods but could not find a way past goaltender Ali Binnington. With 1:35 left in regulation, the Lakers pulled Mercyhurst goaltender Amanda Makela. Seven seconds later, RIT drew a penalty to give Mercyhurst a six on four man advantage for the remainder of the game. Mercyhurst attempted six shots with only two reaching the net with the Tigers defense blocking three.

The Lakers had six power-play opportunities, with Janiga scoring the only Mercyhurst power-play of the game. Mercyhurst also stopped eight of the nine Tigers power-play faced.

Goaltender Amanda Makela suffered the loss in net for Mercyhurst after allowing two goals, both in the first period, and stopped 22 throughout the contest. RIT goaltender Ali Binnington improved to 8-3-1 after stopping 42 of the 43 shots faced.

Both teams go head to head again at Ritter Arena on Saturday, November 23 to complete the two game series. The contest is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
