Men's Soccer Hosts Millersville in NCAA Atlantic Region Final

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's soccer team will host Millersville University on Friday, November 22 for the NCAA Atlantic Region Final. The match will take place at the Mercyhurst Soccer field beginning at 1:00 p.m.

All three contests will be played at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Tickets will be sold at the gate for $10 for adults. Students with a valid ID, senior citizens and children between the ages of 2-12 will be $5. Children under two will be admitted with an adult at no charge. There are no complimentary passes available. PSAC passes and Mercyhurst University president cards will not be honored. The first 50 Mercyhurst University students will receive free tickets courtesy of MSG.

Mercyhurst is 16-5-0 overall this season and is heading into the Atlantic Region Final for the second consecutive season. Last year, Mercyhurst battled against PSAC cross-town rival Gannon University to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals, 2-1.

Mercyhurst has split (1-1) against Millersville in the post-season for the last two years. In 2011, Mercyhurst advanced to the NCAA second round where the fell to Millersville 1-0 after a goal was score early in the first half. Last season, Mercyhurst knocked out Millersville to advance to the PSAC Championship contest after Alex Manea tallied a hat trick to win 3-2.

Both Millersville and Mercyhurst competed earlier in the season, with the Marauders taking advantage with a 2-1 victory. During that match, Mercyhurst freshman Danny Deakin tallied a goal at the 11th minute before the Marauders tied the match at 1 just three minutes later. The contest remained tied until the Marauder scored off a corner kick in the 60th minute to win the contest. Despite the loss, the Lakers outshot Millersville 12 to 10, but were out cornered six to five.

The Lakers are filled with young talent this season, with two of the top three scorers this season freshman. Deakin is second on the team with 31 points and is tied with junior Fernando Martinez in goals (13) and is third on the season in assists. Freshman Jack Watson is third on the team with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points. Martinez leads the team in points (41), is tied in goals and leads the nation in assists (15). All-told eight different Mercyhurst Lakers have scored two or more goals this season, with the Lakers outscoring their competition 53 to 19.

Millersville heads into the Atlantic Region Final with an overall record of 13-5-2 this season. In the postseason, Millersville took Slippery Rock into a shootout where they fell 1-0 to end their PSAC playoff run. The two teams met again in the NCAA stage where Millersville looked for redemption and won 2-1 after scoring two late goals in the match by Austin Hoke and Clark Habecker. This season Millersville joins Mercyhurst in the PSAC with scoring 48 or more goals in a season. Senior Andrew Dukes leads the team with 29 points in the season on 11 goals and seven assists.
