ERIE, Pa. – The tenth ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against Syracuse University on Friday evening. The Lakers remains unbeaten by Syracuse and is now 6-4-2 in the season and 1-1-1 in the College Hockey America conference. Syracuse captures their first tie of the season (6-4-1) and remains unbeaten in the CHA at 2-0-1.
The Orange tallied the first goal of the contest after Jessica Sibley scored a power-play goal at the 9:39 mark of the opening period. Caitlin Roach and Nicole Ferrara added the assists.
Senior
Christine Bestland evened the score at one at the 15:33 mark after finishing a rebound during a scrum in front of the Syracuse net. Sophomore
Jenna Dingeldein tallied her 50th career point on an assist after starting the play behind netminder Kallie Billadeau. Junior
Shelby Bram picked up Dingeldein's pass and gave a quick shot, missed but Bestland finished with a goal at even strength.
Freshman
Jillian Skinner gave Mercyhurst the 2-1 edge just one minute into the middle period. Skinner shot the puck back door after she picked up a rebound from junior
Molly Byrne's wrist shot from the hash mark. Skinner's goal marked her first collegiate goal at Mercyhurst University.
Syracuse answered back and took the lead before the end of the second period. Sibley tallied her second goal of the contest after scoring at the 9:35 mark. Kallie Goodnough then scored the go ahead goal at the 15:10 mark.
The Lakers trailed 3-2 most of the third period before sophomore
J'nai Mahadeo tallied the equalizer at the 15:54 mark of the third period. Mahadeo initially took a shot at the point but that shot was blocked by a Syracuse defenseman. She then picked up her own rebound and send a shot past Billadeau to the top corner of the net.
The Lakers and the Orange headed into a 5:00 minute overtime after the Lakers killed off a penalty at the end of regulation. Both goaltenders did not let a shot past as the Lakers picked up three shots on net during the extra minutes while Syracuse tallied two.
All told, Mercyhurst outshot Syracuse 35 to 23 throughout the entire contest. Bestland led the team with nine shots on net, while Janiga had five and Dingeldein and Mahadeo attempted four.
Junior goaltender
Amanda Makela improved to 6-4-1 overall after stopping 20 shots throughout the 65:00 minutes played. Billadeau made 32 saves to improve to 3-4-1.
Both teams are back in action at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday, November 16. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m.
