Men's Soccer Edges Bloomsburg 2-1 Saturday

Matt Campana scored the game-winner on Saturday as the 19th-ranked men's soccer team defeated Bloomsburg.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's soccer team made goals by Fernando Martinez and Matt Campana in the game's first 15 minutes stand up as the Lakers edged Bloomsburg 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 7-3-0 overall and to 4-1-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Bloomsburg dropped to 3-6-1 and 1-3-1 respectively.

Martinez won an early battle in front of the Bloomsburg goal and deposited his ninth goal of the season, at the 8:40 mark, behind Bloomsburg netminder Bernie Roell. Campana then cashed his third of the year, from Martinez, at 14:58.

Bloomsburg trimmed the deficit in half when Fran Miller stole a long back pass and beat Mercyhurst goalkeeper Nicholas Smith at 23:13. Neither team was able to score in the match's final 66:47.

Both teams had 16 shots in the game with Bloomsburg having a slight 6-5 advantage in corners. Smith was credited with seven saves while Roell made nine. Campana's goal was his second game-winner of the season.

Mercyhurst, winners of four of its last five, will travel to Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, October 8 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
