Danny Deakin of the fourteenth-ranked Mercyhurst University men's soccer team scored the game winning goal with 7:53 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Lakers over visiting Urbana University, 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
The Lakers captured their seventh straight victory after the overtime win to improve to 13-3-0 on the season. Urbana suffered its first loss all year long on the road and fell to 6-4-4 overall on the campaign.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead after junior
Fernando Martinez tallied his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 24:45 of the first half. Freshman
Michael Dirienzo gave Martinez a pass from 18 yards out who then dribbled the ball through three defensemen before sending a shot into the top left corner of the net.
The Lakers were in control the majority of the second half, outshooting Urbana eight shots to three. However, it would be the visitors breaking through at 68:55 to score the equalizer. Tyler Wason tallied his fourth goal of the season after capitalizing on a rebound inside the eight yard line.
After 13 minutes of overtime play, Deakin tallied his tenth goal of the season and second game-winning goal at 102:07 to send the Lakers home with their seventh consecutive victory. Mercyhurst was awarded a corner kick which was taken by freshman
Joseph Korb. The Laker rookie sent the ball into traffic in front of Urbana's net. Urbana's defense cleared the ball to the 18 yard line, but Deakin intercepted and sent a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Mercyhurst outshot Urbana for the contest by a 25-6 margin with a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lakers also held a 14-5 margin in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper
Nicholas Smith improved to 6-0-0 with one save. Nathan Jones suffered the loss for Urbana, turning aside eight shots in defeat.
The Lakers will take to the road on Wednesday, October 30 at Davis & Elkins. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
