ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's tennis team earned its first victory of the young season when it blanked Penn State Behrend 9-0 at the Behrend Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers evened their record at 1-1.
Mercyhurst opened play with three doubles victories, allowing just two points during the course of the three matches.
Freshman
Conor McCooey and junior
Mauricio Canton Diaz teamed up for an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles over Behrend's team of Guillermo Guillen and Sujyat Mony. Senior
Eric Drusko and junior
Mike Vinopal earned an 8-0 win at #2 doubles, while junior
Kyle Hosier and freshman
Miguel Lopez picked up an 8-1 win in the #3 match to complete the doubles sweep.
McCooey got the ball rolling in singles action, disposing of Behrend's Guillen 6-0, 6-0 in the #1 singles match. Canton Diaz also earned a shutout victory at #4 singles over Andrew Trinh of Penn State Behrend.
Drusko knocked off Raphael Bretz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while freshman
Ross Molinaro IV also earned a straight sets victory at #3, defeating Mony 6-3, 6-1. Vinopal and Hosier completed the sweep with straight sets victories in the final two singles matches of the afternoon.
The Lakers will look to build off its sweep of the Lions when it hosts Walsh University at the Penn State Behrend Tennis Courts on Tuesday, October 8. Competition is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
