Men's Soccer Gets 3rd Straight Shutout; Beats Cal 4-0

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout and fourth straight win after blanking California (Pa.) 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 10-3-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the PSAC. California (Pa.) fell to 5-7-1 and 2-3-1 in the PSAC.

Freshman Nicolas Smith made three saves to pick up his third straight shutout and remained unbeaten at 4-0-0 in the season. The Vulcans' goaltender Mitch Mack started the contest and allowed three goals on four shots on net. Alex Heston played thesecond half and allowed yhe final goal on five shots.

At the 24:05 mark of the match freshman Danny Deakin tallied his ninth goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal. The Lakers received a free kick about 19 yards away from the Vulcans' net. Deakin placed the ball to the top right corner of the net and gave Mercyhurst the 1-0 edge.

Before the end of the first, Mercyhurst scored two more goals just three minutes apart to extend the lead to 3-0. Graduate Student Gregory John Andrews scored his second goal of the season at the 37:42 mark. Junior Ryan Lund saw Andrews on the offensive side of the field and passed the ball to the top of the penalty box. Andrews took one touch and lobbed the ball over Mack and into the net.

Freshman Joesph Korb collected his fifth goal of the season at the 39:34 mark after placing the ball to the right corner past Mack. Junior Fernando Martinez had the assist.

Martinez completed the Lakers scoring in the 74th minute of the contest. Deakin started the play by passing the ball into traffic. Freshman Jack Watson redirect the ball to Martinez who was across the goalie box on the left hand side. Martinez then shot the ball behind Heston at the top middle of the net.

The Lakers look to extend their four game winning streak against nationally eighth-ranked Slippery Rock University. The Lakers travel to Slippery Rock, Pa. on Saturday, October 19 for a game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
