PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The tenth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team heads to Providence, Rhode Island to take on the Providence College Friars in a two game series. On Saturday, the Lakers will compete at the newly renovated Schneider Arena starting at 2:00 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m.
The Lakers lead the overall series against the Friars by an 11-3-0 margin. In the last five contests at Schneider Arena, Mercyhurst holds a 4-1-0 record. The only loss at Providence was back on January 12, 2008 when Mercyhurst fell 7-3. The next day, Mercyhurst shut out the Friars 3-0.
Last season, the two teams met at the Mercyhurst Ice Center when the Lakers swept the Friars (6-3, 5-0). Senior
Christine Bestland contributed two goals and four assists throughout the weekend. Sophomore
Emily Janiga added six points on one goal and five assists while junior
Molly Byrne added five points on two goals and three assists. Goaltender
Amanda Makela made her first collegiate appearance in net. She allowed three goals on 27 shots to win 6-3 in game one.
Last time out the Mercyhurst Lakers fell 4-3 in an overtime to Ohio State. The Lakers trailed 2-0 heading into the third period, but scored three goals in the final period. Bestland and Cicero tallied a goal a piece just two minutes apart to even the score at two. The Buckeyes tallied a go ahead goal at the 8:40 mark into the third, but sophomore Jenna Dingledein scored the equalizer with 2:05 left in regulation. The Lakers allowed the winning goal just two minutes into overtime.
Providence opened its 2013-14 season with a split against Union College. Union beat Providence 5-2 in game one but the Friars came back in game two to pick up their first win of the season, 6-2. Last season, Providence (15-16-5 overall) finished fifth in the Hockey East conference with an 8-10-3 record and was voted fourth in the preseason coaches poll. The Friars return 15 letterwinners from last season, including leading scorer Haley Frade who tallied 31 points on 13 goals and 18 assists. Thus far, Cassidy Carels and Maggie Pendleton lead the Friars with 3 points apiece.
