#7 Women's Hockey Suffers 4-0 Loss to #5 Cornell Tuesday

ITHACA, N.Y. – #5 Cornell scored three first period goals Tuesday night and went on from there to blank #7 Mercyhurst 4-0.  The Lakers are now 19-5-1 overall this season.  Cornell improved to 17-4.
 
Cornell's Hayleigh Cudmore scored the first goal of the contest 2:27 into the first period.  Then the Big Red's Brianne Jenner tallied back to back goals, including a breakaway, to give her team a 3-0 lead heading into the dressing room.
 
Mercyhurst held Cornell to only five shots on goal in th middle period and killed Cornell's second power-play chance of the night.   The Lakers had a slight six-to-five shot advantage over the Big Red in the second, but Cornell continued to lead 3-0 after two periods of play.
 
The Lakers fought throughout the third period, and were given six power-play opportunities, but could not capitalize.  Mercyhurst had two 5-on-3 opportunities that were both 50 seconds long.  Cornell goalie Lauren Slebodnick, helped by a stout defense, held the Lakers to only five shots on goal during the man advantage. 
 
The Big Red sealed the win after Jessica Campbell faked out senior goaltender Stephanie Ciampa on a breakaway at the 15:39 mark. Campbell split the defense to tally her eleventh goal of the season.
 
The Lakers were outshot 22-to-19 in the contest.  Freshman Emily Janiga and junior captain Christine Bestland led Mercyhurst with four shots apiece.  Mercyhurst's penalty-killing unit held Cornell without a power-play goal in three opportunities.  Cornell stopped all of the Lakers eight power-plays of the evening.
 
Sophomore goaltender Amanda Makela played the entire first period, and gave up three goals on 11 shots on net.  Makela took the loss, falling to 8-4-1 in the season.  Senior Stephanie Ciampa played the last two periods, allowing only one goal on 11 shots. 
 
Slebodnick made 19 saves for the Big Red, and improved to 14-4 in net for Cornell.
 
Mercyhurst is on the road again this weekend at CHA-newcomer Penn State University on Friday, February 1 and Saturday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.  Mercyhurst leads the CHA with 20 points and a record of 10-2.
