Men's Water Polo Sweeps Two Games Saturday

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team won twice Saturday, beating Penn State Behrend and Salem International. The Lakers beat Behrend, 17-11, and then won, 19-8, over Salem.

At Penn State Behrend, the Lakers got out to a 6-2 advantage after one frame and went up 8-5 at the half. Mercyhurst continued its onslaught with five more goals in the third period before closing out the action with a six-goal victory.

Brett Luehmann led the way with five goals, three steals, and an assist. Alex Strong posted two goals and two assists, while Garret Schoeman had three goals. Kyle Scarry totaled two goals and Danilo Svorcan and Gavin Oakley each had a score and a helper. In goal, Matt Cote made seven saves in the first half and Blake Stabler recorded six stops in the second half.

In the contest against Salem International, Mercyhurst went ahead 5-1 after one quarter and 11-3 at the break. Both teams scored five times in the third period and then the Lakers scored all three fourth-frame goals for the 11-goal victory.

Coach Curtis Robinette used a balanced attack as 18 different players had a goal or an assist. Freshman Dave Matulis had two goals and two assists. Schoeman compiled two goals and an assist and Luehmann had a goal and two helpers. Jordan Hodur collected a goal and three assists, while Svorcan and Luis Solis each had a goal and an assist. Josh Rodriguez added two assists of his own.

Cote, Stabler, and Travis Pulford combined to make 12 saves in goal.

Mercyhurst (3-0) travels to Notre Dame College for a 4 p.m. contest tomorrow.
