ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's varsity lightweight eight team finished the 2012 campaign ranked tenth according to the final USRowing Collegiate Poll of the season.
Three weeks ago, for the third consecutive year, the Mercyhurst University men's varsity lightweight eight boat captured gold at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. The win gave the Lakers their third straight Thomas W. Loschiavo trophy.
After finishing second to Delaware in the heat, Mercyhurst got revenge, finishing six seconds ahead of the Blue Hens to capture the victory in the final. Mercyhurst finished with a time of 6:11.52, with Delaware crossing the finish line in 6:17.48. St. Joseph's rounded out the top three, finishing in 6:22.59. Michigan, Purdue, and Fordham finished fourth through sixth respectively in the six-boat final.
“We're proud to have our lightweights recognized by the USRowing poll this week," said Mercyhurst head coach
Adrian Spracklen. "The guys race in heavyweight events up to Dad Vail so it's challenging for them to get recognition for their hard work. We were honored to be invited to compete in the IRA after our Dad Vail win, but having fast freshmen in the boat made us ineligible. We're not losing anybody out of the eight and we're excited to welcome next year's incoming class and see what impact they'll have on our speed.”
