PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For the third consecutive year, the Mercyhurst University men's varsity lightweight eight boat captured gold at the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday afternoon. The win gave the Lakers their third straight Thomas W. Loschiavo trophy.

The boat, consisting of John Thiede, Ivan Palikuca, Xavier Alexander, Jake Schuppe, David Cullmer, Sam Rouse, Marcin Osajda, Zack Pappas, and Caleb Schuder, earned a trip to the finals by finishing second in its heat during morning racing. The boat finished in a time 6:02.88, slightly over two seconds behind Delaware.

In the finals, however, Mercyhurst got revenge on Delaware, finishing six seconds ahead of the Blue Hens to capture the victory. Mercyhurst finished with a time of 6:11.52, with Delaware crossing the finish line in 6:17.48. St. Joseph's rounded out the top three, finishing in 6:22.59. Michigan, Purdue, and Fordham finished fourth through sixth respectively in the six-boat final.

"After being overlooked by the seeding committee, getting the win is a testament to our resolve," said Mercyhurst head coach Adrian Spracklen. "We had a race plan, we followed it, and we earned today's victory. We knew we were fast and the Dad Vail was the stage to prove it."

Mercyhurst had one other boat in the finals on Saturday, with the men's single, placing sixth in the finals. Junior Jeff Murt, who performed three races in two days (including a second-place finish during Saturday morning's semifinals), finished with a time of 7:54.40 in the final. Oklahoma City won the event in a time of 7:23.59.

The Lakers' lightweight four boat was not as fortunate on Saturday, finishing sixth in the semifinals and missing an opportunity to race in the finals. Jessica Ritchie, Mike Gallagher, Jim Gallagher, Ben Urbanowski, and Gary Loo, who make up the members of the boat, came in with a time of 6:59.51 in the semis. The top two finishers in the race - Delaware and Milwaukee School of Engineering - advanced to the finals.
