ORANGE, Calif.- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team lost twice Sunday at the Chapman Invitational. It fell, 5-3, to Occidental and then dropped an 8-7 decision to Cal State San Bernardino.
Against Occidental, the Lakers fell behind 2-0 after one quarter. After a scoreless second frame, Occidental took control with a 3-1 advantage in the third. Hurst could only manage two fourth-period goals to cut the deficit in half.
Allie Grimes scored two goals and
Lisett Calderon added one. Calderon and
Kylie McCormick each had an assist, while Calderon posted 10 drawn ejections.
Hope Rozelle made eight saves in net.
In the loss to San Bernardino, the Lakers trailed 6-4 at halftime. They won the third quarter, 2-1, setting up a dramatic finish.
Laura Perez tied the contest with 1:50 to go in the fourth, as McCormick had the assist. The Coyotes answered with a score at the 1:34 mark to regain the lead. Mercyhurst had a final opportunity, but Perez hit the post as time ran out.
Perez led with three goals, six drawn ejections, and an assist.
Bella Hersh had two goals and Calderon recorded a goal and a helper.
Kimberly Goodhart added a goal and an assist, while Rozelle made six saves.
The Lakers dropped 3-4 on the season. They travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for three matches next weekend. Hurst will face Iona, Brown, and Princeton on March 3-4.
