LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team will compete in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championship this weekend. The tournament is hosted by Bucknell University.
The sixth-seeded Lakers face #3 Johns Hopkins on Friday, November 2, at 9:30 p.m. Mercyhurst then takes on Salem International Saturday, November 3, at 2:50 p.m. The results from those two contests will determine the rest of the Lakers' schedule for the weekend.
The top four teams from the event will qualify for the CWPA Eastern Championship at Princeton November 16-17. The Lakers have never advanced to Easterns in program history.
In 2012, Mercyhurst is 19-5, marking the most wins in program history.
Garret Schoeman and
Brett Luehmann lead the team with 105 apiece. Schoeman has 50 goals and 55 assists, while Luehmann has 78 goals and 27 helpers.
Isaac Ogloblin has posted 29 goals and 32 assists and
James Owen has recorded 36 goals.
Luehmann was named CWPA Player of the Week for his efforts at the CWPA Division II Eastern Championship last weekend. Goalkeeper
Matt Cote was chosen CWPA Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 saves in an 18-5 win over Gannon in the title match. He shut out the Golden Knights in the first half of play.
JHU is 22-8 overall this season, including a win at the Division III Eastern Championship two weeks ago. Ross Schofield leads the Blue Jays with 94 goals and 52 assists. Alex Whittam has 49 goals and 53 helpers in 2012.
Salem has a 1-9 record this year. The Lakers swept the Tigers in two meetings this season, including a 19-14 victory at Gannon last weekend.
