POMONA, Calif.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team split two games Friday in California. The Lakers beat La Verne, 11-9, and fell to Chapman, 17-11. Both contests were part of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
In the victory over La Verne,
Isaac Ogloblin led with five goals, five steals, and two assists.
Brett Luehmann scored three goals and
Colin McDonald had two.
James Owen recorded one goal and one assist.
Matt Cote made 10 saves in goal.
Against Chapman, the Lakers fell behind 4-2 after one quarter before rallying to tie the game at the half. The second quarter was a wild eight minutes, with the teams trading goals for the entirety of the frame. Mercyhurst tied the match at 6 with 13 seconds to go, but Chapman answered six seconds later to regain the lead. Luehmann responded with another tying score with no time left in the first half.
In the second half, Mercyhurst was outscored 10-4 as it dropped to 11-4 on the season.
Garret Schoeman compiled two goals and four assists, while Ogloblin had a hat trick plus an assist. Luehmann finished with two goals and two helpers.
Danilo Svorcan and
Dave Matulis each had a goal and an assist.
Blake Stabler started in net, posting 10 saves and three steals.
Coach
Curtis Robinette's squad returns to the pool tomorrow. The Lakers play the University of Redlands at 2:20 p.m. and then face Whittier at 6:20 p.m. Both times are Eastern.
