#22 Men's Soccer Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth With Win

Sophomore Fernando Martinez scored the game-winning goal to help his team clinch a PSAC tournament berth.

ERIE, Pa. – No. 22 Mercyhurst men's soccer clinched a PSAC tournament berth with a win against California (Pa.) on Friday, 1-0.  This is the first PSAC tournament appearance since 2009, when the Lakers lost in a shoot out on November 4.  Mercyhurst is now 5-2 in the conference and 9-5-1 overall.
 
Sophomore Fernando Martinez scored his fifth goal of the season, and the only of the match with five minutes left to spare. At the 85:03 mark of the match, Martinez received a pass from Alex Manea, where he then found the back of the net.  Manea notched his fifth assists this season, leading his team in points with 19. 
 
The Lakers outshot the Vulcans 14 to nine, with the Lakers shooting only four goals on net.  California (Pa.) led in corners, eight to six.
 
Senior goaltender Diego Gustin improves to 8-5-1, making four saves.  California (Pa.) goaltender Alex Heston falls to 1-1, making three saves. 
 
The Lakers will host Seton Hill on Monday, October 22 at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field.  Time of the match is set for 2:00 p.m.
