JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – During the second day of regional dual action the Mercyhurst College wrestling team registered wins over Anderson University (45-0) and American International (). The second ranked team in the nation, Newberry College handed the Lakers their first loss of the duals, 35-18.
Freshman
Kody Young started the first dual meet of the day with his 11
th pin of the season over Keenan Simmons of Anderson. The fall took the 133-pounder only 29 seconds to complete. Teammate
Michael Griffith and senior
Eric Fulmer both registered pins in their wins as well. The win marks Fulmer's first of the season as he has battled his way back from an injury. The 184lb Fulmer pinned Bryan Glace in 29 seconds while Griffith tallied his fall at the 3:30 mark over Melchisedac LaVergne.
Five Lakers won by decision including senior
Fred Hale who beat Chase Duke, 8-1 in the final bout of the match.
Levi Smeltzer battled Ian Harper to a 7-4 win while
Tony D'Urso beat Nicholas Giulliette in the 157lb class matchup.
Seth Stonis took the mat for the Lakers in the 197lb slot and recorded a 6-2 decision win over Jordan Denmark.
In their second dual meet of the day the Lakers battled the second ranked team in the nation in Newberry. The Wolves started the match with a win in the 125lb slot before
Kody Young beat Johnny Cronin in a 6-4 decision during the overtime period.
Jermey Landowski matched up against B.J. Young in the 141lb class. Landowski took his nationally ranked opponent into overtime where No.6 Young would win after a takedown. Deral Brown another nationally ranked wrestler for the Wolves registered a major decision over
Michael Griffith. The win put the Wolves up 11-3 early in the match.
Jordan Shields and
Fred Hale would be the only grapplers for the Lakers to come away with wins for the rest of the match. Shields beat Davis Bagwell in a 7-0 decision while Hale faced Jake Elkins the fourth ranked wrestler in the nation and the first ranked grappler in the region. The match played back and forth throughout the entirety with Hale coming away with the 9-8 decision win.
In the final dual meet of the Super Region I Duals the Lakers handled the Yellow Jackets of American International in a 29-15 win, marking their ninth win of the season. Mercyhurst won six bouts in the win with Young leading the way pinning Andrew Chase in 30 seconds. The pin marks his 12
th of the season and gives the freshman a 25-6 record after going a perfect 3-0 this weekend.
The Lakers 125-pounder,
Ryan Bohince went 3-1 for the duals beating Cole Ludorf in a 3-1 decision in his final bout.
Jordan Shields registered a major decision win over Noah Kail for his second win of the duals. Mizia went 3-1 capping his weekend off with a 11-2 major decision over Vladimir Bereshchenko. The freshman has now eclipsed 20 wins on the season with a 21-8 record for the season.
The Lakers ended the dual with
Seth Stonis and
Jeffrey Pollard pinning both of their opponents. Stonis pinned Llie Cojocaru during the 2:33 mark of the match recording his second pin of the season. Pollard stopped his match at the 1:51 mark after pinning is second foe of the year.
After this weekend's action the Lakers now own a 9-4 record heading into a dual meet against cross-town rival Gannon University on Jan.26
th at 7 p.m. inside the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Mercyhurst is 4-6 all-time against the Golden Knights losing its match last season in the Hammer Mill center, 27-15.
