Baronick Earns First Place; 10 Lakers Advance to National Tournament

BENSALEM, Pa. – The Mercyhurst wrestling team qualified 10 wrestlers for the national tournament with sixth place or better finishes at the Mid-East Conference Championships.
 
Joey Baronick highlighted the Lakers performance, winning the heavyweight bracket. Baronick advanced to the semifinals on a bye, winning that match, 3-0. In the finals, Baronick took down Williamson College of the Trades, Henry Ascenio, by fall in just over a minute to claim the title.
 
Edwin Mooney earned second place in the 133 bracket, advancing quickly to the finals. Mooney pinned his opponent in the opening round before earning a 15-9 win in the quarters. He made his way to the finals on a 16-2 major decision before falling in the championship bout 15-0.
 
Colin Scherer also earned a second place finish, earning tech falls in his first two matches. In the semifinals round he took down Slippery Rock's Brett Thompson, 5-0 to advance to the finals. Scherer came up short, losing 8-7 to take second place.
 
At 125, Travis Browning came in third place. The lightweight Laker won his first bout before dropping to the consi bracket. There, he won by fall to advance to the third-place bout. He earned a win by tech fall, 19-4 over Slippery Rock's Jacob Stetz.
 
Marcus Colson and Chris Cibrone took fourth place in the 141 and 157 bouts respectively. Colson won his opening match by pinfall before moving to the consolation bracket. He moved his way into the third place match where he fell by decision 4-2.
 
Cibrone won his round of 16 and quarters match before falling to the consolation bracket, losing 13-6 in the semifinals. He made his way to the third place match in which he fell, 9-4.
 
Keith Mincin (165), Brady Fitz (174), and Joshua Johnson-Cantrell (197) all earned sixth place finishes, advancing to nationals.
 
At 184, Jake LeClerc earned a wild card bid to the national tournament.
