Wrestling Competes at NCWA National Championships

Bossier City, LA – The Mercyhurst wrestling team finished their run at the NCWA National Championships. The team scored 47.5 points to finish inside the top 15. 
 
Travis Browning started the competition on a high note, earning a win by pinfall in the opening round of 32 at 125 lbs. Browning fell in the following round of 16 match, but won his first consolation match, again by pinfall. He stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 20-2 tech fall before bowing out in the next round.
 
In the 133 lbs bracket, Edwin Mooney dropped his opening bout, falling 18-3. He bounced back with a pair of wins, pinning Ottawa's Fabriccio Hernandez in 28 seconds and earning a 15-0 tech fall over Northeastern's Derek Immerman. Mooney lost his second bout, falling out of the consolation bracket in the round of 16.
 
Colin Scherer got off to a hot start in the 149 lbs bracket, winning back-to-back bouts, 10-3 and 9-3 respectively. However, Scherer fell in the round of 16 and followed that with another loss in the consolation bracket, ending his run.
 
Making it all the way to the consolation of eight, Chris Cibrone's tournament ended to Penn State's Christopher Nesbitt, 18-7. Cibrone earned a 17-2 tech fall to start the tournament before dropping to the other side of the bracket with a 18-5 loss. He won his first match following the loss, 21-5 before bowing out.
 
Keith Mincin also made it to the consolation of eight at 165 lbs. He posted a win by pinfall in the round of 32 before dropping to the consolation bracket in the round of 16. He won his first consolation bout 6-5, but fell in the next match 8-4 to end the season.
 
At 174 lbs, Brady Fitz fell in his opening bout, but bounced back with three consecutive wins. He earned his first by tech fall 21-5, then a pinfall, followed by a 20-4 tech fall. He fell out of the bracket, falling 16-8 to UNLV's Leonardo Salzano.
 
Jake LeClerc represented the Lakers in the 184 lbs bracket. He dropped his opening bout before winning the next two by pin and 7-4 decision respectively. He fell in the consolation of 16, 18-6.
 
Joshua Johnson-Cantrell had a similar path, losing his first bout and winning the next two, both by pinfall. He fell out of the bracket in the next round, falling 17-0.
 
At heavyweight, Joey Baronick won his first round match 12-1 over Central Florida's Chase Eckman. He dropped a tightly contests match in the round of 16, 9-6 before pinning his first opponent in the consolation bracket. He fell in his next bout, 2-0, ending his run.
 
Marcus Colson competed at 141 lbs for Mercyhurst. He dropped his opening bout before advancing due to forfeit. He fell in the next bout, 2-0.
