WASHINGTON, Pa. and Salem, W. Va.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team won twice Saturday, defeating Washington and Jefferson 19-11 and then Salem International 12-7 in two road contests. The Lakers improved to 7-4 with the victories.
Against Washington and Jefferson, Hurst got out to a 7-3 start after one quarter. It led 13-7 at the half. The teams each scored twice in the third period before the Lakers scored four more goals in the final frame.
Raul Ariza had five goals and
Brett Luehmann added four.
Samuel Lopez contributed a hat trick and
Colin McDonald assisted on three scores.
Matt Cote made 10 saves in net.
Mercyhurst then headed to Salem, where it picked up another win. Senior
Gui Alves recorded three goals, while
Brandon Yasses scored a goal, assisted on three others, and made three steals. He also set a school-record with four field blocks in the contest. Luehmann played one half in goal, making five saves.
Hurst travels across Erie to face Gannon on September 30 for a 7 p.m. match. The Lakers beat Gannon 15-10 on September 9.
