Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo Falls Twice Sunday in Maryland

Brett Luehmann scored seven times in two matches Sunday.
ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team lost twice Sunday at the North-South Invitational. The Lakers fell to Brown, 20-11, and then to Iona, 11-10, in overtime. Both matches were held at the Naval Academy.

Against Brown, Hurst fell behind 7-1 after one quarter and 10-2 at halftime. It was able to score nine second-half goals. Brett Luehmann led the charge with four goals and an assist. James Owen had three scores and Luis Solis dished out three assists. Matt Cote recorded eight saves.

In the finale against Iona, Mercyhurst scored with two seconds left in regulation to tie the contest at 10. However, the Gaels went on to score the winner with 10 seconds remaining in overtime. Luehmann had a hat trick and two helpers. Alex Strong contribued two goals and four assists. Owen scored three times and Cote made 12 saves in net.

The Lakers (5-4) hit the road again next weekend, traveling to Washington & Jefferson and then Salem International on Saturday, September 24.
