ERIE, Pa. -- The Lakers increased their winning-streak to 10 games after the 27th-ranked Mercyhurst College baseball team took a doubleheader from Wheeling Jesuit to complete the weekend sweep of the Cardinals.

The Lakers edged WJU 1-0 in the opener before posting an 8-0 victory in the nightcap to move to 31-9 overall.  Meanwhile, the Cardinals fell to 11-20 overall after the three-game series.

In game one, Kevin McCall provided the offense with his RBI-single to plate Jonathan Keppler in the fifth inning.  On the mound, one run would be all that southpaw Nick Gillung would need as he threw seven shutout innings.  He walked just one while striking out 12 batters.  He now owns 80 strikeouts in 2011, setting a new single-season best for the Lakers.

In the nightcap, the Lakers posted three runs in the second and third innings while adding two more in the sixth.  Ethan Santora led the Lakers with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in three runs while also scoring two runs.  Keppler, Zak Blair, Craig Denman, Bill Gerstenslager and Adam Brentlinger each drove in a run for Mercyhurst.

Zack Leitten and Thurman Schaetzle combined for the shutout on the mound, with starter Leitten going six full innings.  Leitten allowed just three hits and struck out eight, and Schaetzle added a hitless final inning to preserve the Lakers third-straight shutout and fourth in the last five.

Mercyhurst returns to the diamond on Monday, April 25 when it travels to Notre Dame College for a single nine-inning game.

Notes:
Mercyhurst honored its 10 seniors with a ceremony between the first and second game:  Jonathan Keppler, Craig Denman, Kevin McCall, Justin Urschel, Nick Scheetz, Thurman Schaetzle, Nick Gillung, Adam Brentlinger, Scott Knoche and D.J. Haurin.
