No.12 Ashland Beats Lakers, 27-15

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Mercyhurst College wrestling team suffered it's eighth loss of the season after suffering a loss to No.12 Ashland University, 27-15. Freshman Michael Pollard tied the single season pin record after recording a fall over his competitor at the 4:19 mark.

Pollard has now tied former Lakers Zack Schafer and Justin Maut for the single season pins record. Pollard has accumulated 19 wins this season, 14 coming from falls over his opponents. Currently Pollard is on a five match win streak after his win against Ashland's Corby Running. Pollard will have his chance to sit alone, atop the single season pin record tomorrow when the Lakers compete in the Lake Erie Quad meet.

Redshirt sophomore Michael Baxter also recorded a pin fall during today's action. In the second match of the dual meet Baxter helped the Lakers gain the lead after he pinned Ryan Marks in 4:59. Baxter evens up his overall record this season at 7-7.

Eric Fulmer enters double digit wins on the season after his decision win tonight (Feb.4). The junior from Pittsburgh, Pa. wrestled Caleb Marsh in a tight match but prevailed with a 4-0 decision. The fourth regionally ranked grappler looks to improve his standings moving on as he now holds a 10-3 overall record.

Fred Hale (7-3) suffered his third loss of the season against the fifth ranked wrestler in the nation at the 285lb weight class. Jacob Southwick who Hale beat last season pinned Hale during the 4:41 of the bout.  Southwick has eclipsed 20 wins this season and is the only Eagle to be nationally ranked.

Mercyhurst (9-8) has now dropped four-of-six and looks to regain momentum as they will be traveling to Painsville, Ohio to compete in the Lake Erie Quad meet tomorrow, Feb 5. The Lakers will be taking on Ohio Valley University, Tiffin University, and host Lake Erie College. The first match is set to begin at 11 a.m. in the Jerome T. Osburne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
