LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Lynn University rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth to complete the come-from-behind victory and hand Mercyhurst College a 7-6 setback Friday night. Kyle Radzewski's RBI single up the middle with two outs plated Alex Bello for the game-winner.
The Fighting Knights scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead after the Lakers opened with a run in the first frame and three in the top half of the fifth. However, Mercyhurst (3-2) looked poised to take the comeback after scoring two runs in the top of the ninth, but Lynn (6-6) benefitted from a pair of walks in the final frame to edge the Lakers.
Sam Jones earned the win for the Fighting Knights, retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth. His counterpart,
Samuel O'Neill, took the loss on the hill.
The Lakers needed just two batters to open the scoring as
Kevin McCall's RBI-double scored leadoff man
Jonathan Keppler after he drew a walk to begin the game.
In the fifth, the Lakers took advantage of several Fighting Knight errors and a wild pitch to score all three of their runs with two outs.
Adam Brentlinger opened with a single and quickly made it to third when Lynn misplayed a bunt attempt by
Justin Urschel. Keppler reached on catcher's interference to load the bases and the Fighting Knights booted the ball around the infield, beginning with a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing the Lakers to clear the bases.
However, the Fighting Knights came back with five of their own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to throwing errors and a wild pitch by the Lakers.
In the ninth, Mercyhurst put together a two-out rally behind
Zak Blair's two-RBI single.
