Bailey Bram,
Kelley Steadman, and
Jess Jones combined for nine goals and eight assists, as the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team defeated Lindenwood University 14-1 on Saturday afternoon. It marked the fifth win in a row for the Lakers, who improved to 6-2 overall on the season. The Lady Lions dropped to 0-10 on the year.
Bram recorded a career-high seven points in the victory, with two goals and five assists. Steadman also established a career-high with four goals in the victory, while Jones tied a career-high with five points (three goals and two assists). Steadman and Jones each recorded her second career hat trick.
Mercyhurst led 3-1 after the first period as Jones scored twice. She started the barrage with a goal at 3:49 of the first, with assists going to freshmen defenders
Molly Byrne and
Caroline Luczak. Steadman made it 2-0 at 7:19 with an assist from Jones. The Lions got their only goal of the weekend as Alyssa West notched her third goal of the season at 16:40, snapping a consecutive scoreless streak of 208:15 by Laker goaltending. Mercyhurst's 3-1 lead ballooned to 10-1 after 40 minutes, as the Lakers scored seven times in the second period. Jones completed her hat trick 55 seconds into the period, with Bram and
Lauren Jones registering the assists. Steadman scored her second goal of the game at 2:53, with an assist from senior
Jill Szandzik. Freshman
Shelby Bram scored her second goal of the season at the 6:09 mark, as Szandzik and
Vaila Higson had the assists, giving the Lakers a 6-1 lead at that point. Steadman then completed her hat trick at 9:25 with Bram and Byrne dishing out the assists. Freshman
Hailey Browne then recorded her first collegiate goal at 12:32 with an assist from Byrne, followed shortly by Bestland scoring her sixth goal of the year from Steadman and Luczak. Senior captain
Pamela Zgoda scored her first goal of the season to cap off the second period scoring. Bram again assisted at 16:41.
The Lakers tacked on four more goals in the third period. The younger Bram scored her second of the game 2:35 into the period, with Byrne notching her fourth assist on the tally. Freshman
Kristine Grenier also had a helper. Older sister Bailey then scored her first goal of the game and eighth of the season at 11:09 with assists going to Bestland and Luczak. Steadman picked up her fourth of the game and eighth of the season at 13:53 with Bram and Jones assisting. Bram closed the scoring at 16:12 with an assist to Szandzik.
All told, 13 Mercyhurst players recorded at least one point on the afternoon, with eight registering multiple points. Bram led the way with seven points, while Steadman and Jones each had five points. Byrne recorded four assists, while Szandzik, Luczak, and Bestland each had three points.
Shelby Bram also had a multi-point game with a pair of goals.
For the second game in a row, the Lakers recorded at least 70 shots on goal, firing an even 70 at the Lindenwood netminder Taylor Fairchild. Mercyhurst had at least 20 shots in each of the three periods, with a game-high 27 coming in the second period.
The Lakers were 5-of-7 on the power play and are now 12-of-33 on the season with the skater advantage (36.4%). Lindenwood, meanwhile was 1-of-4 on the power play.
Junior
Stephanie Ciampa started in goal and played the first two periods for the Lakers. She made seven saves in picking up her first win of the season. Freshman
Amanda Makela saw her first collegiate action in goal, stopping all five shots she faced in the third period.
The Lakers will be home on Wednesday, November 2, for an exhibition game against the Brampton Thunder. It marks the return of 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner,
Vicki Bendus, who was drafted by Brampton fourth overall in the Canadian Women's Hockey League draft. The Brampton roster features of 11 members of the Canadian and U.S. National Teams, and also features a couple of other former Lakers, Ashley Pendleton and Natalie Payne. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
