Lakers Sweep Robert Morris With 7-1 Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed the series sweep of Robert Morris Saturday afternoon, defeating the Colonials 7-1 at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Lakers posted their 26th straight win over RMU (26-0-0) as they improved to 20-5-0 on the season and 9-0-0 in College Hockey America play.

Mercyhurst rolled to its third win over the Colonials this season with five different players scoring goals, including two with two strikes apiece. Senior assistant captain Jesse Scanzano and junior Pamela Zgoda combined for six points in the win, with Scanzano netting two goals and two assists and Zgoda chipping in a career-high two scores. Senior captain Meghan Agosta added a goal and an assist, and junior Kyleigh Palmer and sophomore Samantha Watt both scored their first goals of the year.

The Lakers opened the game with three goals in the first period. Zgoda registered her first of the game and third of the year at the 7:26 mark while Palmer netted the eventual game-winner less than three minutes later at 9:38. Scanzano then made it a three-goal lead with under eight minutes to play at 13:15.

Mercyhurst outscored the Colonials 2-1 in the second, with Watt scoring for the first time this season at 1:14 and RMU's Theo Imbrogno giving the Colonials their lone marker at 17:26. Agosta restored the four-goal lead when she exposed the Robert Morris power play with the team's eighth short-handed strike of the year at 18:03.

MC closed out the game with two goals in the third. Scanzano netted her second of the match with just 27 seconds elapsed, and Zgoda put the finishing touches on the game at 16:25.

Junior Hillary Pattenden earned the win in goal for Mercyhurst with 25 saves and one goal allowed. The Lakers outshot the Colonials 33-26. MC also converted 1-for-6 on the power play and held RMU scoreless on seven man-advantage chances.

Mercyhurst continues its four-game road trip next weekend when it faces Niagara on Saturday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 30 at Dwyer Arena.
