GROVE CITY, Pa. – Junior
Rachel Griepsma scored seven goals to lead the Mercyhurst College women's water polo team to a pair of victories at the 2010 Grove City Invitational Saturday afternoon in Grove City, Pa. The Lakers defeated host Grove City, 13-4, and Washington & Jefferson, 13-6.
Griepsma scored four goals against GC and three against W&J, giving her a team-leading 53 tallies on the season.
Mercyhurst (9-12) coasted in each game. Against Grove City, the Lakers held leads of 1-0 after the first quarter and 7-1 going into halftime. A 4-1 scoring advantage occurred in the third before each team exchanged markers in the finale.
In the nightcap, MC needed a 6-2 run through the second half to comfortably dispose of the Presidents. Leading 7-4 at the break, Mercyhurst shut out W&J, 2-0, in the third and capped the game with a 4-2 advantage in the fourth.
In addition to Griepsma, junior
Nicole Nelson contributed five goals on the day, freshman
Lisett Calderon racked up a goal and four assists and sophomore
Laura Perez tallied four times. Sophomores
Tara Bouma and
Jessica Clemente each registered three goals apiece, while junior
Alyssa Katerberg netted two.
Both goalkeepers split duties at the invitational. Sophomore
Hope Rozelle recorded 18 saves and allowed four goals in the win against Grove City while senior
Cathi Korenich made nine stops and allowed six goals against Washington & Jefferson.
