No. 5 Lynn University 10, Mercyhurst 7
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Defending national champion and fifth-ranked Lynn University pushed five runs across in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 10-7 victory over Mercyhurst College on Tuesday afternoon.
Lynn moves to 6-5-1 on the year while the Lakers fall to 2-2 in their southern swing.
Samuel O'Neill took the loss for Mercyhurst, allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits through 3.1 innings of work.
Russell Gardner also saw action on the mound, giving up no earned runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. #T.J. Tavender# closed out the hurlers with a scoreless, hitless inning of work.
Offensively, the Lakers opened the game with a one-out single by
Kevin McCall that was followed by back-to-back-doubles from
Ethan Santora and
John Blike.
They would add another in the top of the second when
Adam Brentlinger doubled in
Craig Denman who reached after being hit-by-pitch.
In the fourth, the Lakers added two more runs thanks to RBI singles by
Justin Urschel and
Jonathan Keppler.
Mercyhurst added a run in the sixth and the eighth on RBI singles by Santora, who finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
The Lakers return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, February 24 when they take on Lynn in another single 9-inning game.
