No.10 Lakers drop Urbana, 3-1

URBANA, Ohio - The No. 10 Mercyhurst College men's soccer team beat Urbana University today (Oct.3) 3-1. This registers their eighth win of the year giving them their best start since 2002 when the team ended the season with a 17-2-0 record. With the win the Lakers improve to 8-0-1 on the year.
 
In the first half of play, the Lakers out-shot the Blue Knights 10-3 and held a corner kick advantage 2-1. Of the 10 shots the Lakers took seven of them had to be saved by William Harvey of the Blue Knights. Of the seven shots on goal for the Lakers two of them made their way past the goal keeper. Both goals came off the foot of junior Alex Manea.
 
Manea registered his first goal of the match and the sixth of the season at the 19:40 mark of today's contest. The assist was credited to both senior Dean Atkins and sophomore Matias Karioja, giving Atkins his first assist of the season and Karioja his fifth.
 
Freshmen Matthew Campana found Manea at the 36:09 mark, Manea took full advantage of the well timed pass and put the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the match and seventh of the year. Campana registered his second assist of the season with the helper.
 
Sophomore Diego Gustin allowed just his fifth goal against himself when opponent Stuart Brown beat Gustin in the 64:54 minute. The Blue Knights crossed the ball into the box, headed into the air, then headed again to beat a diving Gustin.
 
In the 78:26 minute Atkins added an unassisted insurance goal to the Lakers final score. After the goal the Lakers led 3-1, which would be the final score of the match. The goal gives Atkins his seventh of the season tying Manea for the lead on the squad. Atkins edges out Manea (14) in points on the team with 15.
 
The No.10 Lakers now look ahead to their next opponent in Lock Haven University.  The Bald Eagles are 4-5-2 overall this year and are 2-3-1 in PSAC play. The game time is set for 4 p.m. and will take place at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Live stats will be a available at http://sidearmstats.com/hurst/msoc/index.htm.
