LOS ANGELES – The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team split a pair of games on the second day of its California trip Friday evening. The Lakers fell to Chapman 12-8 before posting a 13-11 victory over Occidental.
In the early game, Chapman and Mercyhurst went back and forth through the first three quarters before the host team broke a 7-7 tie with three straight goals en route to the 12-8 win.
Sophomore
Ian Tasman led the offense with a goal and four assists, while senior
Kane Ashton, junior
Josh Rodriguez and freshman
Brett Luehmann each netted two goals. Senior
Alex Moggridge rounded out the offense with a goal.
Senior
Andy Sekulski made 13 saves in the setback.
Mercyhurst bounced back later that evening after making the trip from Orange to Los Angeles to take on Occidental. Staring at another deadlock in the second half, the Lakers snapped an 8-8 tie with a 5-3 scoring advantage through the final two frames, highlighted by a 4-2 edge in the third quarter.
Luehmann and Moggridge led the team with three goals apiece, freshman
Raul Ariza and Rodriguez each added two and Ashton, Tasman and sophomore
William Page found the back of the net once.
Sekulski increased his Friday save total to 32 with 19 stops in the game.
Mercyhurst closes out its stay in the state of California on Saturday, Oct. 16 with games against California Lutheran and Cal Tech in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
