Clarion, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team controlled play from start to finish in a 2-0 victory at Clarion Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Jamie Laturell and
Taylor Hilinski scored one goal each, as the Lakers' win gave
Keith Cammidge his 100th victory as head coach of the Mercyhurst women's soccer team.
Due to a field maintenance issue, the game got underway nine minutes late. Following brief pressure from Clarion, Mercyhurst took over possession of the ball for a majority of the first half. In the sixth minute, Junior
Jamie Schroter found space on the right side and sent a long diagonal ball to
Jamie Laturell, who controlled it near the top of the box, dribbled and found the back of the net 5:45 into the match. The goal, Laturell's first of the season, was assisted by Schroter.
Playing with the lead, the Lakers continued to maintain possession, skillfully playing the ball from defense to midfield and back while stretching the Golden Eagle defense with searching through-balls and crosses. Clarion played defensively, failing to gain clear possession of the ball while allowing space and time in the midfield. Despite several more Mercyhurst chances, Laturell's early goal stood as the lone tally of the first half.
Early in the second half, Clarion committed several players to the attack, putting Mercyhurst on the defnesive. Play became less organized in the second half, with fewer extended periods of build up by either team. The Lakers maintained their territorial edge, with the defenders holding Clarion to few shot attempts. Nearly 15 minutes into the second half, Schroter found Hilinski with another long ball toward the corner flag, and the ball was played out for a Laker corner kick.
Schroter's corner kick found
Braedyn Ordway at the far post., who quickly headed the ball across the goal where Hilinski stabbed it home for the Lakers' second goal. Hilinski's goal, her second in as many games, was set up by Ordway and Schroter.
Throughout the balance of the match, the Lakers continued to generate scoring opportunities, narrowly missing adding to their goal total. The Lakers shut down Clarion for the rest of the match and took the 2-0 victory.
