ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst (10-7, 2-0 PSAC West) cruised to a sweep of crosstown-rival Gannon (2-13, 0-2 PSAC West) in both team's opening doubleheader of PSAC Western Division play as the Lakers posted a 14-0 whitewashing in game one before taking a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Lakers had a huge day offensively from senior
Jeff Stoll, with the first baseman going 2-for-5 with two homeruns and six RBI. Rookie
Ethan Santora continued his hot streak at the plate, collecting two long-distance strikes in game one as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBI.
Joseph Furner also added three RBI on a 2-for-4 effort.
On the mound,
Steve Grife improved to 3-0 as he held Gannon scoreless through 5 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out seven Golden Knights.
Thurman Schaetzle and
Abram Rak combined for 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief to preserve the shutout.
In game two the Laker lineup provided plenty of pop as all their runs were scored via the homer.
Stoll drove in three of the Lakers five total runs on a 1-for-2 effort thanks to a three-run bomb in the bottom of the first inning while
Craig Denman finished off the Lakers scoring as he went 1-for-3 and added two RBI on a two-run blast of his own in the bottom of the sixth.
Nick Gillung allowed just one run on one hit and walked just one while striking out eight in six innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Lakers will take on Gannon again in a doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, March 15 beginning at 1 p.m.
